Graduate Programs

The Department of History offers specialized study of world societies and their evolution to the present. We offer a highly competitive graduate program. The Graduate Faculty directs both seminars and specialized training leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Master of Arts Programs

Graduate work in history presupposes an undergraduate major in that subject of approximately 30 semester hours. Students who present a minimum of 30 hours may be admitted without deficiency. Students who present between 18 and 30 hours may be admitted with or without deficiency subject to the determination of the Graduate Studies Committee. Students who present less than 18 hours of history may not be admitted without deficiency.

Ph.D.

Admission to doctoral study in history, in addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School, requires the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee.

Each applicant must meet all University of Arkansas requirements for the M.A. degree in history, with a grade point average of at least 3.2 in previous graduate history work. Applicants without an M.A. degree or its equivalent, but with exceptionally strong qualifications, may be admitted directly into the Ph.D. program at the discretion of the Graduate Studies Committee of the Department of History.

Assistantships

Graduate assistantships are available to candidates of demonstrable ability for all graduate degrees. Stipends are $4,900 for nine months for master's candidates. Ph.D. candidates are eligible for stipends from $9,800 for nine months. The deadline for applications each year is January 15 for PhD students and March 15 for MA students.
