For Students
“I use the education I received at the University of Arkansas Department of History every day.”
-Mark Pryor, BA 1985. US Senator 2003-2015, Attorney General of Arkansas 1999-2003
A liberal arts major in history prepares you for an unlimited number of careers. Through studying the past, you will learn to read critically and to think analytically. You will learn to write well and to argue effectively - the best ideas in the world are worthless if you cannot persuade others of their value. In a survey of over 300 employers, 93% agreed that “a candidate’s demonstrated capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems is more important than their undergraduate major.” 74% agree that a liberal arts education is the “the best way to prepare for success in today’s global economy.”
- Liberal Arts prepare graduates for long term success
- Liberal Arts graduates and employment
- That Liberal Arts degree is Tech’s Hottest Ticket
- We need more STEM majors with Liberal Arts Training
- Thinking like a historian in scrubs
University of Arkansas History graduates go on to do great things. A considerable number are attorneys. A few became judges, including Henry Woods, Steele Hays, and Morris Arnold. Another, Martin R. Steele (BA 1974), has served his country as a top-ranking general in the U.S. Marine Corps. We also count as proud products of our department bankers, medical doctors, librarians, journalists, museum directors, poets, park rangers, software entrepreneurs, helicopter pilots, cheerleaders, the mayor of Fort Smith, and two United States Senators, Mark Pryor and Fulbright.
The University of Arkansas and the Department of History offer a wide range of resources to help you find a job after graduation:
- Fulbright Futures Career Communities are an excellent place to start thinking about what you want to do after graduation and how that connects to your major.
