Honors
Both the College and the Departmental Honors Programs in History provide undergraduates with an opportunity to carry out independent study and research under the guidance of history faculty and to participate in special honors classes, seminars, and colloquia. Admission to the 4-year Fulbright College Honors Program is open to all history majors with a minimum, cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 in all of their coursework. Normally entering freshmen will enroll in the college honors program, while students who choose honors at a later point will pursue the departmental option
To graduate with College Honors, History majors must fulfill the Honors core, including either HIST 1113H or HUMN 1114H, and either HIST 1123H or HUMN 2114H. They must also take a minimum of 12 hours of honors courses numbered 3000 and above, including Honors Methods (HIST 3973H) and at least 3 but no more than 6 hours of HIST 399VH, the honors thesis.
To graduate with History Department Honors candidates must complete a minimum of 12 hours in honors courses, including Honors Methods (HIST 3973H) and at least 3 but no more than 6 hours of HIST 399VH, the honors thesis.
Whether pursuing Department or College Honors, History majors will also be required to fulfill the foreign language requirement, required for all honors in Fulbright College, completing one world language at the intermediate II (2013) level (minimum requirement). The list of World Languages is the following: ARAB, CHIN, FREN, GERM, GREK, ITAL, JAPN, LATN, PORT, RUSS, SPAN, or SWAH.
To complete the required honors thesis, candidates should choose a faculty thesis director as early as possible but no later than the first semester of the their junior year. Students graduating with honors typically graduate with the distinction cum laude. Higher distinctions (magna cum laude, summa cum laude) are awarded by the Honors Council in truly exceptional cases and are based upon the whole of the candidate’s program of honors studies.
